On Saturday, October 10th, MVA sophomore Sydney Johnson-Scharpf was featured in an article published by the Orlando Sentinel. The news piece praises Sydney’s work ethic as a student-athlete, and also describes Sydney’s mother, Mrs. Brandy Johnson-Scharpf, as providing vital support to Sydney’s training, competitive success, and overall development as an individual. The article also states that “…Johnson-Scharpf made the junior national gymnastics team in August in Indianapolis. With 10 months before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Montverde Academy sophomore is a contender to become one of five gymnasts (plus up to three alternates) to qualify for the United States women’s squad…Brandy Johnson (Sydney’s mother) was a shining light on the U.S. gymnastics team at the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Now she is coaching her daughter and serving as a living, breathing GPS for what could be the ride of a lifetime.”
Mrs. Johnson-Scharpf now operates the Brandy Johnson’s Global Gymnastics, located in Clermont, Florida, and was a member of the USA Gymnastics’ team at the 1988 Olympics. The article explains how Sydney has overcome many physical challenges en route to achieving her current success as an accomplished high-school student-athlete that has included winning a battle over a health condition called “…hydronephrosis…Sydney underwent surgery when she was three months old…and battled kidney and bladder infections as a young child.”
