The 2015-2016 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team will play their season opener at HOME on Friday, November 20th against Pebblebrook High School – from Mableton, Georgia, and then play their second game of the season at HOME on Saturday, November 21st, against Wheeler High School – from Alamo, Georgia. MVA’s team is ranked very high in national high-school basketball polls this pre-season. MaxPreps, a popular on-line sports media informer for national high-school sports, suggested the Eagles could possibly win another national championship (please visit: MaxPreps 2015-16 Basketball Early Contenders – Montverde Academy). The Eagles are also ranked #2 in the United States according to the most recent USA TODAY Super 25 Pre-Season Boys’ High School Basketball Rankings.
Two new Eagles, both from Canada, are expected to play an important role on MVA’s overall seasonal success: 6-1 junior guard Marcus Carr and 6-9 sophomore center Simi Shittu. Both of these players possess strong basketball skills and fundamentals. 247sports.com (with CBS Sports.com) recently wrote of Shittu, “Another elite Canadian import, Shittu is a physical five-star hybrid-forward. The Montverde sophomore is a high-motor forward who relentlessly attacks the offensive glass.” Other Eagles anticipated to soar this season are returning 6-9 center sophomore E.J. Montgomery, 6-7 sophomore forward Silvio De Sousa and returning senior guard Howard Washington , who has already committed to Butler. 6-10 Ohio State University commit Micah Potter, a native of Mentor, Ohio, and Anfernee Simons, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Orlando, Florida, will provide added offensive depth in both scoring and rebounding.
The 2014-2015 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team (31-1) improved their record to 107-7 over the last four seasons under MVA Head-Coach Kevin Boyle. On Saturday, April 4, 2015, the Eagles defeated USA TODAY #1 ranked (and previously undefeated) Oak Hill Academy, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia (47-1), 70-61, in the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Boys’ National Tournament Championship. The 2014-2015 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team was the first high-school basketball team to win three consecutive national titles since the decade of the 1940s.
